The BrahMos Aerospace, the Indo-Russian joint venture behind the world’s only supersonic cruise missile, is gearing up for its next technological leap. The company is now focused on developing a near-hypersonic variant of the BrahMos missile, aiming to push its speed to an unprecedented Mach 5.

Currently cruising at Mach 3, the BrahMos is already a formidable weapon. However, the corporation believes that a further speed boost will render it virtually impossible to intercept by modern air defence systems. To achieve this, BrahMos is working on an improved ramjet engine capable of propelling the missile to near-hypersonic speeds.

India and Malaysia have agreed to strengthen their military collaboration, with a particular focus on the maintenance and upgrade of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) operated Su-30MKM fighter fleet. Under the proposed agreement, the RMAF’s Su-30MKM fleet could be overhauled and upgraded with Indian-made systems. This cooperation would not only benefit both countries but also strengthen their strategic partnership in the region.

In addition to the Su-30MKM upgrades, both countries are exploring other areas of cooperation in the maintenance of Russian-origin fighter jets. The RMAF has expressed interest in acquiring the BrahMos-A air-launched cruise missile, a joint Indo-Russian venture.

A major milestone has been achieved in India’s defence manufacturing sector with the upcoming activation of the final assembly line (FAL) for the ‘Make in India’ C295 program. After receiving approval from the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) earlier this year, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is poised to begin producing detailed parts and sub-assemblies for the C295 aircraft in India.

The factory in Vadodara, Gujarat, is expected to go operational by the end of November or early December. Construction on the facility began in October 2022, and the company anticipates producing up to eight C295s annually.

Following the recent approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) 5.5gen fighter jet program, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is hopeful of finalizing a deal for the new engine for the program by 2025.

The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) will collaborate with one of the contending companies, which includes offers from Safran, Rolls-Royce, and GE, to co-develop a new 110kN engine. This engine will be the powerplant for the AMCA, a crucial component for its performance and capabilities.

On September 2, 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) gave its approval for the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero-engines for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI aircraft. This procurement will be conducted under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) as the supplier. The total cost of the acquisition, including all taxes and duties, amounts to over Rs 26,000 crore.

The new batch of AL-31FP engines will come equipped with Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC), a significant upgrade aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and performance of the Su-30 MKI fleet. FADEC is a sophisticated electronic system that optimizes engine performance by automating control processes, thereby reducing pilot workload and improving overall fuel efficiency and reliability.

India has made its latest nuclear-powered submarine, INS Arighaat, more capable than its predecessor, INS Arihant, by fitting it with longer-range missiles and adding a high level of indigenous content in it.
The INS Arihant is the first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine made by India, commissioned in 2018, while the INS Arighaat is the second SSBN, commissioned last week into the Navy by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The INS Arighaat has been fitted with missiles that can hit targets at a range of over 3,500 kms and will be a strong deterrent for the country, sources told ANI. Meanwhile, INS Arihant is fitted with missiles that can hit targets at around 750 Km, they said.

India successfully launched the Agni-4 ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha, on Friday, a Defence Ministry release said. The successful test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.According to the Defence Ministry, the launch validated all operational and technical parameters.

“A successful launch of an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4 was carried out from ITR in Chandipur, Odisha on September 6, 2024,” Defence Ministry statement mentioned.

The navies of India and France carried out a mega wargame in the Mediterranean Sea in reflection of their common strategic interest in the maritime domain.

Indian naval ship Tabar and long-range maritime surveillance aircraft P-8I participated in the 22nd edition of the Varuna exercise, the Indian Navy said. The mega exercise took place from September 2 to 4. In addition to INS Tabar, the Indian Navy was represented by the ship borne helicopters at the exercise.

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Omar Abdullah said that the visit of US diplomats to Kashmir was only possible with the approval of the Indian government. He said that no foreign diplomat or media person can enter Jammu and Kashmir without the permission of the ministries under the government of India.

On being asked about the visit of the US diplomats to Kashmir to meet him, Omar Abdullah in an exclusive interview with ANI, said, “Who allowed them to come? Government of India. No diplomats or the foreign media are able to visit Jammu and Kashmir with the express permission of the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home, in consultation with agencies here and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.

 The Indian Navy, including its highly trained divers, has joined the search operation launched by the Coast Guard to locate a pilot who went missing after its helicopter crashed into the Arabian Sea off Gujarat’s Porbandar coast four days ago, officials said on Thursday.

The Navy’s “clearance diving” team, which has highly skilled personnel who perform a variety of underwater tasks, along with a specialized vessel are assisting in the search and rescue operations of the missing crew member Rakesh Rana, a pilot, said Coast Guard PRO Amit Uniyal.

A female Maoist cadre carrying a bounty of Rs 14 lakh on her head has been arrested from Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh, the police said on Friday. The arrest came when the Hawk Force of Madhya Pradesh Police was carrying out a special search operation in the Parsatola area under the Chichrangpur forest range in the district during night hours on Thursday.

“During the search, two suspicious individuals were spotted and after a brief pursuit, one of them was apprehended. However, another Maoist managed to escape,” the police said.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has asked its Bangladeshi counterpart, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), to “prevent” citizens of the neighbouring country from illegally entering India in the wake of the Sheikh Hasina government’s fall in August, the force said on Friday.

The BSF also said it is committed to maintaining the sanctity of the 4,096-km international boundary, along with ensuring the safety and security of the border population.
