A major milestone has been achieved in India’s defence manufacturing sector with the upcoming activation of the final assembly line (FAL) for the ‘Make in India’ C295 program. After receiving approval from the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) earlier this year, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is poised to begin producing detailed parts and sub-assemblies for the C295 aircraft in India.

The factory in Vadodara, Gujarat, is expected to go operational by the end of November or early December. Construction on the facility began in October 2022, and the company anticipates producing up to eight C295s annually.

The first Indian-made C295 is slated for delivery in 2026. This significant development marks a significant step towards India’s goal of self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing.

The C295 program is a strategic partnership between Airbus and TASL. Under the agreement, Airbus will deliver the first 16 aircraft in a “fly-away” condition from its final assembly line in Seville, Spain. However, the remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled in India, demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in aerospace manufacturing.

The C295 is a versatile military transport aircraft that will replace the Indian Air Force’s ageing AVRO fleet. It is expected to play a crucial role in various military and civilian operations, including troop transport, cargo delivery, and search and rescue missions.

The successful implementation of the C295 program is a testament to India’s commitment to ‘Make in India’ initiatives and its potential to become a global aerospace manufacturing hub.
