India is poised to make significant investments in its submarine fleet over the next ten years, underscoring the country’s determination to enhance its undersea capabilities. According to GlobalData, India is projected to spend approximately $31.6 billion on procuring various types of submarines.

Central to these plans is the expansion of the Arihant-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) fleet. The Indian Navy aims to commission two additional Arihant-class submarines, each equipped with a larger missile-carrying capacity. This expansion will bolster India’s sea-based nuclear deterrence and strengthen its strategic capabilities.

In addition to the Arihant-class submarines, India is also developing Six larger S5-class SSBNs. These submarines will incorporate advanced stealth technologies and be armed with long-range submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) such as the K-5 (6,000 km range) and K-6 (with a range exceeding 8,000 km). The S5-class submarines will further elevate India’s SSBN fleet as a credible nuclear deterrent.

Beyond the SSBNs, India has plans to acquire three additional Kalvari-class submarines, which are already in service. Furthermore, the country is pursuing the development of six next-generation submarines under Project-75I and another six under Project-76. Additionally, India aims to develop its own two nuclear attack submarines under Project-77.

These investments in submarine technology reflect India’s strategic vision and its commitment to maintaining a strong naval presence. As the country continues to expand its maritime interests, the development of a modern and capable submarine fleet will be crucial to safeguarding its security and protecting its national interests.
