In a significant demonstration of technological prowess, the Indian Air Force (IAF)’s Software Development Institute has successfully developed the program for the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) for the LCA-Tejas fighter jet at zero cost, outperforming a Defense Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) that had quoted a staggering 290 crores for the same task.

Air Vice Marshal KN Santosh, Commandant of the IAF’s Software Development Institute, revealed this achievement during an interview with Bharat-shakti. The institute, co-located with the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), has played a pivotal role in the development of advanced software solutions for the IAF.

In a recent development that has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, a tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) belonging to the Indian Army, known as the Switch VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) hybrid tactical drone, inadvertently landed in Pakistani Occupied Kashmir area after losing control due to a reported “technical malfunction.” The incident has prompted a response from both military establishments, with the Pakistan Army recovering the UAV in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and subsequently transporting it to Islamabad for further investigation.

The Pakistan Army quickly responded to the situation by securing the Switch VTOL UAV. The debris of the drone has been sent to Pakistan’s Army Cyber Security team, which is conducting a detailed examination to extract any data that could provide insights into the UAV’s mission and origin. The investigation aims to obtain crucial data, including the launch area and other GPS coordinates, from the UAV’s onboard systems.

The MiG-23’s retirement from active service in the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been a gradual process. The last MiG-23MF variant was phased out in March 2007, followed by the MiG-23BNs in March 2011. However, a limited number of MiG-23UB trainers remained operational for specialized roles.

The Indian Navy has received the green light to place orders for the P17B frigates, a follow-on class to the Nilgiri-class frigates currently under construction. As part of the Next Generation series of future frontline surface combatants, the P17B class is expected to significantly enhance the navy’s capabilities. However, the staggering cost of $1.19 billion per ship has raised eyebrows among defense analysts in India.

The P17B frigates are estimated to cost a significant 50% more than their predecessors, the P15B frigates. This substantial increase in price has led to comparisons with the Talwar-class frigates, which could have been acquired in greater numbers for the same cost.

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, along with Prashanth Nair and the rest of the Axiom-4 mission crew, have arrived in Houston to begin their rigorous training program. This marks a significant milestone as Shukla prepares to become the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) since Rakesh Sharma in 1984.

India’s defence exports have surged from Rs 15 billion in 2017 to Rs 210 billion in 2024, registering a CAGR of 46 per cent, highlighted a report on ‘Defence Conference 3.0’ by Antique Stock Broking. The report stated that the global shift towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war offer India additionnal opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the global defence industry.

The report noted that the country’s long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. “Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%.

The government will set up a special purpose vehicle to push ahead with plans to start manufacturing commercial aircraft in India, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Wednesday as he highlighted the potential of the country’s fast-growing aviation sector.

The Bhartiya Vayuyan Vidheyak Bill 2024, which was passed by the Lok Sabha in August, includes provisions to regulate the design and manufacturing of aircraft, supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative for self-reliance.

Aviation regulator DGCA has ordered a probe into the incident of an aircraft engine part found outside the Delhi airport, sources said on Wednesday.

While they mentioned that the metal part might be of an Air India Express aircraft that made an emergency landing at the airport on Monday, the airline said that it could not confirm yet if the metal pieces were from its aircraft.
