The BrahMos Aerospace, the Indo-Russian joint venture behind the world’s only supersonic cruise missile, is gearing up for its next technological leap. The company is now focused on developing a near-hypersonic variant of the BrahMos missile, aiming to push its speed to an unprecedented Mach 5.
Currently cruising at Mach 3, the BrahMos is already a formidable weapon. However, the corporation believes that a further speed boost will render it virtually impossible to intercept by modern air defence systems. To achieve this, BrahMos is working on an improved ramjet engine capable of propelling the missile to near-hypersonic speeds.
Development trials for this next-generation BrahMos are expected to commence between late 2027 and 2028, with the missile eventually being offered to the Indian Armed Forces.
Looking further into the future, BrahMos also has its eyes on a fully hypersonic cruise missile. Based on the Russian Tsirkon shipborne hypersonic missile system, this future weapon is projected to achieve speeds of Mach 6-7. However, the development of this hypersonic missile is likely to be a post-2030 endeavour.
These developments underscore India’s growing prowess in missile technology and its ambition to stay at the forefront of global defence innovation. A hypersonic BrahMos would undoubtedly be a game-changer, providing the Indian armed forces with an unparalleled strike capability.
