India’s ambitious space program is set to achieve a significant milestone with the unveiling of the latest design for the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS). Building on the initial plans announced in 2019, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has doubled the station’s mass and crew capacity, showcasing a leap in technological prowess and vision for human spaceflight.

The BAS now boasts an overall mass of 52 tons, significantly increased from the initially planned 25 tons. This robust design spans 27 meters in length and 20 meters in width, providing ample space for scientific experiments, habitation, and operations.

Indian private space company Skyroot Aerospace has achieved a critical milestone in its journey towards its first orbital launch. The company successfully completed the proof pressure test of the Vikram-1 launch vehicle’s Stage-1 hardware, aptly named Kalam-1200.

This 10-meter-long stage, constructed from high-strength carbon fiber, plays a vital role in propelling Vikram-1 during the initial phase of its flight. The Indian government is poised to equip the Indian Army with a significant boost in firepower. A critical cabinet committee meeting in August is expected to approve the purchase of 100 additional K9 Vajra tracked, self-propelled howitzers.

This repeat order follows the successful delivery of the first 100 K9 Vajras by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in 2022. These howitzers, built using technology transferred from South Korean defense major Hanwha Defense, were originally intended for desert deployment. However, their adaptability was proven during the 2020 standoff with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. To ensure optimal performance in the harsh mountain environment, the Army procured winterization kits for the deployed K9s. These kits, consisting of nine essential items, safeguard batteries, oils, and lubricants from extreme cold (down to -20°C) and prevent freezing.

Lockheed Martin which is vying for a major contract with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to supply 40-80 new medium transport aircraft (MTA) to replace its ageing fleet of Soviet-era An-32s has identified two potential Indian partners Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) and state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for local manufacturing of its C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.

TLMAL is a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Lockheed Martin. The company has a successful track record, serving as the single global source of C-130J empennage assemblies for all new Super Hercules aircraft manufactured in Marietta, Georgia, USA. This existing partnership positions TLMAL as a strong contender for the local production of C-130Js in India.

India’s state-owned Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) has achieved a significant breakthrough in the development of advanced materials for the indigenous 5th generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program. MIDHANI’s engineers have successfully formulated a special “space-age” titanium alloy named Titan6242S (Ti-6AL-2Sn-4zr-2Mo-0.08Si).

This newly developed titanium alloy boasts an outstanding combination of tensile strength, toughness, and creep resistance at elevated temperatures reaching 565°C. These properties make Titan6242S ideally suited for the high-pressure compressor (HPC) casing of the AMCA’s jet engine, which endures extreme stress and heat during operation.

India is evaluating the possibility of acquiring Stryker Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) for its army. However, the Stryker has a history of both strengths and vulnerabilities that India should consider before making a decision.

Developed under former Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki, the Stryker entered service in 2003. Initially praised for its ability to transport troops, its limitations soon became apparent. The armor proved insufficient, and the wheeled design caused maintenance problems due to mud clogging the engine. Additionally, computer systems malfunctioned, and seatbelts were inadequate for troops in combat gear during rollovers.

The Indian Army is mulling a significant increase in its initial requirements for the Stryker combat vehicle. Talks are currently underway with the potential manufacturer to develop an army-specific variant of this 8-wheeled armored personnel carrier, with a Technology Transfer (ToT) agreement for indigenous production in India.

Initial discussions centered around procuring 350 Stryker vehicles. However, the Indian Army is now considering doubling this number to 530 units. This substantial increase reflects the army’s growing interest in the Stryker’s capabilities and its potential to equip 10 battalions.

Airbus Defence and Space has confirmed the delivery of two C-295 transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF). These aircraft, numbered four and five, departed from the Airbus production facility in Seville, Spain.

This delivery is part of a larger agreement between Airbus and India. The initial 16 C-295s will be manufactured entirely at the Seville facility. Subsequently, a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) and Airbus will oversee production at a new facility in India.
