A leaked CGI image has sent ripples through the Indian defence sector, sparking speculation about the country’s upcoming unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV). Many believe it’s a glimpse into the secretive Futuristic Unmanned Fighter Aircraft (FUFA) program helmed by DRDO’s ADE (Aeronautical Development Establishment).

The FUFA program, shrouded in secrecy, aims to develop a twin-engine, low-observable (stealthy) UCAV. This “loyal wingman” concept envisions a high-speed, unmanned aircraft with a low radar cross-section (RCS) airframe. Equipped with internal weapons bays and capable of fully autonomous take-off and landing, FUFA could revolutionize air combat.

Mahindra Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. is making a strong push for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program. A high-level team recently visited Embraer’s facility in Brazil, where the C-390 transport aircraft – a contender for the IAF tender – is manufactured.

This visit comes after Mahindra Aerospace and Embraer joined forces earlier this year. The collaboration aims to establish local production of the C-390 in India, should the IAF select the aircraft.

The race to develop High-Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS) is intensifying in India, with two key players vying for dominance: CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and Newspace Research and Technologies Pvt Ltd.

CSIR-NAL successfully test-flew its HAPS prototype at the Challakere testing facilities in Karnataka earlier this year. This scaled-down model, with a wingspan of 11 meters and weighing 23 kilograms, achieved an impressive feat by staying aloft for approximately eight hours at an altitude of 3 kilometers. NAL aims to develop a full-scale version with a significantly larger wingspan (30 meters) by 2027, capable of flying for at least 90 days at an altitude of 23 kilometers.

The Maldives military still does not have pilots capable of operating three aircraft donated by India, Defence Minister Ghassan Maumoon has acknowledged, days after 76 Indian defence personnel left the island nation at the instance of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu.

Ghassan made the remarks at a press conference held at the President’s Office here on Saturday to brief the media about the withdrawal of Indian soldiers stationed in the Maldives to operate two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft and their replacement with civilians from India.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath has said the Indian space industry is offering a tremendous opportunity to the private sector in the country as a new area of growth and development. He said the union government envisages the space sector in the country to become a 9 to10 billion dollar industry in the next 5-10 years from the current levels of 2 billion dollars.

Somanath was speaking after unveiling the carbon reduction initiative of SFO Technologies, the flagship company of the NeST Group, in a function here on Saturday, a company release said. He also said that 400 private sector companies have benefited from the technology developed by ISRO for its various missions.

Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer has said that significant strides have been made in expediting India-assisted projects in the Maldives, as he underscored the government’s commitment to prioritising the resumption and completion of these projects.

Zameer, who visited India from May 8 to 10 on his very first bilateral official visit, said he and his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar engaged in bilateral discussions on May 9 to address pivotal matters aimed at expediting the projects initiated with India’s financial assistance.

The delay in implementation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in view of the current situation in West Asia is a matter of ”concern” and the expectation generated following firming up of the initiative in September last has to be “adjusted” a bit now, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said.

In an exclusive interview to PTI, Jaishankar said all the stakeholders of the IMEC — a ship-to-rail transit network — are committed to it as they feel it is a ”great” initiative. “It has definitely been a source of concern for us and the kind of expectation we had when the agreement was signed in September, we have had to adjust it a bit,” he said when asked whether the ongoing crisis in West Asia would delay the project by at least a few years.

Director General Defence Intelligence Agency (DG DIA) Lieutenant General DS Rana has proceeded on an official visit to the United Republic of Tanzania. The aim of this visit, scheduled from 13-15 May 2024, is to further reinforce the robust defence ties between the two nations and discuss opportunities for regional security collaboration.

During his visit, the DG DIA is scheduled to interact with senior military leadership of Tanzania, including the Chief of Defence Staff of Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Force, General Jacob John Mkunda, and his counterpart Maj Gen MN Mkeremy, Chief of Defence Intelligence. In his visit to the Tanzanian National Defence College, he will discuss India’s Security Perspective with future leaders of the TPDF. The meetings will be aimed to foster mutual understanding and strengthening bilateral defence cooperation.

 Political activist from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) Amjad Ayub Mirza said India cannot remain aloof from the current situation in PoJK and must act now. He called on India to focus on PoJK as the situation is getting out of hand there.

Mirza said people of PoJK, particularly the younger generation are confronting Pakistani forces on the streets. He said that Pakistani forces have been shooting people and at least two people have been reportedly killed recently. He said that one police SHO is rumoured to be killed and the situation is getting out of hand.
