United States “strongly oppose” China’s attempts to advance a claim over Indian territory, Arunachal Pradesh by renaming localities, the White House said on Tuesday.

“The United States strongly opposes any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control,” a US State Department representative was quoted as saying by South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Tuesday. This latest remark is in line with the State Department’s response last month when it reiterated the country’s stance, recognising Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory.

During deliberations with his then-deputy Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel over a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to make sure China got a place in the forum ahead of India, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said today.

Mr Jaishankar made the remarks during an address at the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ahmedabad, revealing how Sardar Patel warned PM Nehru of a threat from China. However, the latter played down his concerns and, instead, advocated a permanent seat at the UNSC for China, Mr Jaishankar said.

Over 1.13 lakh Kashmiri migrants are registered to cast their votes for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for three seats in the Valley, officials said. The Jammu and Kashmir administration will hold special awareness camps for Kashmiri migrants in Jammu and Udhampur districts from April 3 to 14 to ensure their participation in the Lok Sabha elections.

“We have 1.13 lakh registered Kashmiri migrant voters as of now. The updated voter list is being prepared as per the election process,” Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner Arvind Karwani told PTI. Karwani, who is looking after the arrangements for the polling of migrants, said that polling will be held in three phases in the Valley.

Jaishankar stated that it is the responsibility of India to look at such situations in the neighbourhood and how to tackle them in cooperation with other nations. He stated that most of the crew members are Indian nationals in case of an attack on a ship and added that India is worried about their safety.  Three more bodies of Naxalites were recovered on Wednesday morning in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district where a fierce encounter took place between security personnel and Naxalites the previous day, police said.

With this, the number of Naxalites killed in the gun battle on Tuesday has risen to 13, they said. Following the major anti-insurgency operation ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the police on Tuesday found bodies of 10 Naxalites, including a woman.
