A prominent voice has emerged, advocating for a significant shift in the composition of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Former Singapore diplomat Kishore Mahbubani has argued that India should be granted a permanent seat on the UNSC, while the United Kingdom should relinquish its position.

Mahbubani’s assertion is rooted in the belief that India’s current global stature warrants a more prominent role within the UNSC. He posits that India is undeniably the third-most powerful country in the world today, surpassed only by the United States and China. In contrast, Mahbubani contends that Great Britain has lost its former global influence and no longer deserves a permanent seat on the council.

The Indian Navy has recently disclosed new information regarding its upcoming PGLRSAM interceptor missile system, currently under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This next-generation missile system is set to significantly enhance the naval air defence capabilities of the Indian Navy’s frontline warships.

The PGLRSAM interceptor missile is projected to have a range exceeding 250 kilometers, more than double the range of the existing MR-SAM (Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile) interceptor, which is deployed on Indian warships and has a range of 90-100 kilometers. This substantial increase in range will provide the Indian Navy with a broader operational envelope to engage aerial threats at greater distances, thus enhancing the overall defence perimeter of its vessels.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully tested the Astra Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile in a networked mode, marking a significant advancement in India’s air combat capabilities. The test involved two Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas: one detected and tracked the target, while the other, operating in a silent mode, received the target information through a data link and launched the Astra missile. This achievement demonstrates a substantial leap in the IAF’s operational tactics and electronic warfare capabilities.

The recent test of the Astra BVR missile showcased a sophisticated level of network-centric warfare. In the exercise, the first LCA Tejas utilized its radar to locate and lock onto a target, then relayed this information via a secure data link to a second LCA Tejas, which remained in a non-emitting, stealth mode. The second LCA then fired the Astra missile based on the shared targeting data without emitting any radar signals itself.

The induction of the S-400 Triumf air defense system, coupled with the development of the indigenous Project Khusha, marks a significant leap forward for India’s air defense capabilities. These systems, with their impressive long-range interception capabilities of 350-400 kilometers, are set to drastically alter the dynamics of aerial warfare in the region.

The deployment of the S-400 and Project Khusha systems will create a formidable air defense umbrella over India’s critical assets. The long-range nature of these systems means that enemy aircraft, including fighter jets, will have to operate much deeper within their own territory to avoid detection and interception. This will significantly reduce the reaction time available to potential adversaries, limiting their options for offensive operations.
