A significant milestone has been reached in the production of India’s indigenous light combat aircraft, the Tejas. GE Aerospace is set to commence deliveries of F-404 engines from this month, with two engines scheduled for shipment. This marks a crucial step in accelerating the production of Tejas aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The US aerospace giant plans to deliver an additional six F-404 engines by the end of March 2025, enabling HAL to deliver at least eight Tejas Mk1 Trainer and Mk1A jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF) within the same timeframe.

India’s decision to prioritize investment in Lottering ammunition systems over unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for combat operations is proving to be a strategic gamble that may pay off in the long run.

The recent Russian-Ukrainian conflict has highlighted the vulnerabilities of UAVs in modern warfare. Despite their initial successes, UAVs have proven to be highly susceptible to sophisticated air defense systems. Last year Indian Air Force’s Chief of Staff, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, has echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the limited impact of UAVs when faced with multi-layered defenses.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has appointed Dr K Rajalakshmi Menon as the Director General (Aero Cluster), based out of Bengaluru. In addition to her new role, Dr Menon will continue to serve as the Director of the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS).

Dr Menon’s appointment marks a significant milestone for DRDO, as she becomes the second woman scientist to hold the position of Director General (Aero Cluster). Her expertise in airborne surveillance systems and her extensive experience in various areas of defense research make her a valuable asset to the organization.

In the wake of a recent accident involving a Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH Mk-III), the Indian Coast Guard has ordered a one-time safety inspection of its entire ALH fleet. The focus of the inspection will be on the flying controls and transmission system. As a precautionary measure, the fleet has been temporarily grounded.

The accident occurred near Porbandar, Gujarat, when the Dhruv helicopter (Tail Number CG 863) plunged nose-down into the Arabian Sea. Initial investigations revealed that the helicopter, which belonged to the Coast Guard’s Porbandar-based 835 Squadron, experienced a critical failure in its flying control system.

The Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) has been engaged in a long-standing endeavor to modernize the 9mm pistol, a mainstay of the Indian Armed Forces since the late 1970s. The pistol, a licensed version of the Browning Hi-Power, has been a workhorse for Indian troops, but its reliability issues, particularly stoppages, have been a persistent concern.

Despite these shortcomings, the pistol remains indispensable in counter-insurgency (COIN) operations, where a reliable sidearm is crucial. Recognizing the need for a superior, indigenously produced pistol, the OFB has been working tirelessly to develop a replacement that meets the stringent demands of modern warfare.

A significant step towards strengthening defense cooperation between India and Tanzania was showcased recently as Lt Gen Pawan Chadha, VSM, GOC Maharashtra Gujarat and Goa Area, witnessed a successful ICV field firing demonstration by Tanzanian Mechanized Infantry Battalion (MIB) personnel.

The Tanzanian troops, currently undergoing a BMP Training Course at the Mechanized Infantry Centre & School (MIC & S) in Ahmednagar, exhibited their impressive ICV firing skills, including missile launches. This demonstration is a testament to the intensive training they have received at the MIC & S and their rapid assimilation of the complex operations of the Infantry Combat Vehicle.

The Indian Pavilion at the Egypt International Air Show 2024 showcased a wide range of advanced defense systems, highlighting India’s growing capabilities in the aerospace and defense sector.

Indian Army unveiled two landmark events; ‘HIM-DRONE-A-THON 2’ and ‘HIMTECH-2024’ landmark events designed to harness military technologies for operations in high altitude areas. Envisaged as an opportunity to the Indian Drone Industry to showcase the capabilities of their drone solutions for high altitude areas, HIM-DRONE-A-THON 2 will take place at Wari La, near Leh on 17-18 September 2024. It will be followed by HIMTECH-2024 on 20-21 September 2024, an event conceptualised to discuss, demonstrate and discover new avenues for development, incorporation and cross pollination of technology, ideas and innovations with focus on harnessing military technologies for high attitude areas.

Major General CS Mann, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau highlighted that the Indian Army is deployed from icy heights of the Siachen Glacier to the rugged Himalayas where its soldiers face unparalleled adversities daily. For drone operations, rarified atmosphere results in reduced lift and degraded engine performance which are further accentuated by extreme cold temperatures and high wind speeds.

The third edition of Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between India and Kenya was held in New Delhi on September 3, 2024.The two countries discussed a wide range of avenues for defence cooperation in areas like military cooperation, training, defence industries, R&D etc.

The Kenyan delegation has met Indian defence industry representatives in Delhi. The delegation is also slated to visit Pune where they would interact with representatives of defence industries to get first-hand experience of their capabilities.

The film tells the story of Major Shaitan Singh and the soldiers of Charlie Company, 13 Kumaon Regiment. It is set against the backdrop of the 1962 Indo-China war, draws inspiration from the Battle of Rezang La, where our men in uniform displayed unparalleled courage, heroism, and sacrifice. The bodies of the 9 Naxals killed in the encounter with security personnel were brought to the mortuary of Dantewada District Hospital in Chattisgarh on Wednesday. The security forces killed these 9 naxals during an encounter operation in the forest at the Dantewada-Bijapur on Tuesday. Dantewada SP Gaurav Rai said large numbers of SLR rifles, .303 Rifles and .315 Bore rifles were recovered from the Naxals. All security force personnel involved in the operation were safe.

Five Bangladesh nationals, including four women, were apprehended and pushed back from Assam’s Karimganj district on Wednesday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

They were nabbed by the Assam police while trying to enter Karimganj from neighbouring Tripura. “Our @assampolice personnel are maintaining constant vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border and alert to thwart infiltration attempts,” the chief minister posted on ‘X’.
