Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is accelerating the development of the Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH), a medium-lift aircraft designed for diverse military roles. C.B. Ananthakrishnan, Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, confirmed this initiative, emphasizing the current design stage and ongoing efforts to secure partnerships.

Recognizing the tight timeline, Ananthakrishnan acknowledges the need for a non-conventional approach. HAL is actively pursuing business model development and strategic tie-ups with various suppliers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to expedite the program’s progress.

To ensure timely completion, HAL has adopted a collaborative strategy:

  • Engine: A joint venture with French defence giant Safran will provide the IMRH’s engine.
  • Transmission and Rotor Systems: HAL is in discussions with two to three foreign companies for these crucial components.
  • Airframe and Avionics: HAL is collaborating with the Indian private industry for these elements.

The IMRH program holds immense potential for India, aiming to replace ageing helicopter fleets and bolster the country’s self-reliance in defence technology. With its accelerated timeline and strategic partnerships, HAL is poised to deliver a next-generation helicopter that meets the evolving needs of the Indian armed forces.
