Airbus S.A.S. and Tata Advanced Systems have announced a strategic partnership to enhance India’s defense supply chain and develop new products to meet the country’s defense requirements. This collaboration will focus on developing capabilities for acquiring raw materials, manufacturing detailed parts, establishing sub-assembly and assembly facilities, and prioritizing the production of electric harnesses.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is exploring the possibility of upgrading its fleet of 17 IL-76 strategic transporters through collaboration with Indian private sector companies and defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). The proposed upgrade, which was initially discussed with Russia in 2018, aims to extend the operational life of the IL-76 aircraft by another 15 years.
At the heart of the upgrade lies the replacement of the outdated Soloviev D-30KP turbofan engines with the more fuel-efficient and less noisy PS-90a-76 turbofan engines. This change would not only enhance the aircraft’s performance but also allow it to operate on commercial routes.

The Meteor is a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) that is designed to engage enemy aircraft at very long distances. Feasibility studies to incorporate the Indian-made Astra Mk1 air-to-air missile with the Rafale fighter jets, procured from the French aerospace company, Dassault Aviation, are expected to be completed next year. Earlier this year, the Indian Air Force (IAF) requested Dassault Aviation to integrate indigenous weapons such as the Astra, a beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile, and the Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) with Rafale fighter jets.
The Astra Mk1 missile is a highly maneuverable BVR missile with a range of over 100 kilometers. It is designed to engage enemy aircraft at long distances before they can enter Indian airspace. The integration of the Astra Mk1 with the Rafale would significantly enhance the IAF’s air-to-air combat capabilities.

In a significant development for India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project, the United Kingdom has renewed its offer to collaborate on the development of a new-generation engine for the fighter jet. At the Dubai Airshow, which took place in mid-November, Russian officials presented the updated version of the Ilyushin Il-76 airlifter. This aircraft was designed to transport cargo and personnel. This was the first international trade show appearance for the Il-76MD-90A.
Like many planes designed in the Soviet era, the Il-76 has glass at the bottom of the nose to give navigators a good view. Russian officials have confirmed that the new upgraded aircraft has been offered to many current Ilyushin Il-76 airlifter operators, including India, which is looking to replace older ones. The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates 17 Ilyushin Il-76s that were procured in the mid-1980s and are expected to be completely retired from service by 2035 onwards.

The current inventory of MANPADS in IA has only MANPADS of IR homing types. These are susceptible to ‘Trn-based IR Source effects’ of Northern Borders and IR countermeasures of hostile platforms. MANPADS with Laser Beam Riding tech cannot be jammed by such measures and therefore have better survival in the EW environment.

Public sector major Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has achieved a significant milestone in the development of India’s indigenous air defence capabilities by commencing Limited Series Production clearance from DRDO for Astra Mark-I Missile. The missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by BDL, is a beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile that will significantly enhance the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat capabilities.
Last Year BDL got a Rs 2,971-crore contract for Astra Mk1, which will be executed in six years. DRDO has completed the transfer of technology on the missile and associated equipment to BDL, and production has already started. BDL is estimated to be able to manufacture 100 units of Astra Mk1 missiles per year and will complete the order book of 500 units by 2027.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to take a major step towards bolstering its combat capabilities with the planned acquisition of 97 additional LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. The Rajnath Singh-led defense acquisitions council is expected to grant the ‘acceptance of necessity’ (AoN) for the purchase when they meet on the 30th of this month.
The AoN is a crucial step in the procurement process, signaling the government’s approval for the purchase and paving the way for further negotiations. Once the AoNs are granted, the tendering and commercial negotiations will take place before the three deals are submitted to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for the final nod.
