Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), a leading Indian shipyard, is working on validating locally developed packaging for Lithium-Ion Battery modules and testing them with a Battery Monitoring System (BMS) for submarines. This innovative technology is set to be integrated into three upcoming Kalvari-class submarines for the Indian Navy.

MDL aims to complete the development and testing of this new technology by December 2026. The three follow-on Kalvari-class submarines will be equipped with these upgraded Lithium-Ion Battery modules and BMS, offering significant improvements over the six Kalvari-class submarines already in service with the Indian Navy.

As India and the United States inch closer to finalizing a deal for the local manufacturing of 99 F-414 engines, the country’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to establish a new production facility.

HAL has already identified suitable land for the facility and is developing plans to manufacture at least two engines per month at a peak production rate. The new F-414 production line is expected to commence operations in 2028, with an initial output of one engine per month. This rate will gradually increase to two engines per month, aligning with the planned production capacity of 24 Tejas MkII fighter jets annually by 2030-31.

G. Ramamohana Rao, Director of the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), has confirmed that Bharat-Forge has obtained the Transfer of Technology (ToT) for the WhAP 8×8 wheeled armoured platform. This significant development paves the way for Bharat-Forge to produce its variants of the WhAP, tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

Following the footsteps of Tata and Mahindra, Bharat-Forge becomes the third company to secure ToT for the WhAP platform. Tata and Mahindra have already introduced their second-generation WhAP models, incorporating valuable feedback from the Indian Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been given the green light to develop two new variants of the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MRBL) system for the Indian Army. One variant will have a range of 150 kilometers, while the other will boast a range of 250 kilometers or more.

The decision to develop these new Pinaka MRBL variants comes in response to the growing demand for the RAMPAGE air-launched rocket system, which is of Israeli origin. The DRDO aims to design the next-generation Pinaka MRBLs with the capability of being launched from fighter jets such as the Jaguar, Su-30, and Mirage-2000.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is closely monitoring a significant asteroid named ‘Apophis’, which is on a trajectory that will bring it dangerously close to Earth. This asteroid, named after the Egyptian deity of chaos, is expected to make its nearest approach to our planet on April 13, 2029.

ISRO, in recent years, has expanded its focus to include planetary defense, a field dedicated to safeguarding Earth from potential threats posed by extraterrestrial objects. “A large asteroid strike is a real existential threat for humanity,” said an ISRO official. “Our Network for Space Objects Tracking and Analysis (NETRA) is monitoring Apophis very closely. India will cooperate with all nations to ward off this and other such future threats.”

Amid increasing use of unmanned warfare, the Defence Ministry has given approval to the Indian Navy’s plans worth over Rs 2,500 crore to build 100-tonne unmanned underwater vessels. The proposal for building the 100-tonne unmanned underwater vessels was given clearance at a high level defence ministry meeting held recently, defence sources told ANI here.

The underwater vessels in the Extra Large category would weigh over 100 tonnes and would be equipped with strike capabilities against enemy submarines and surface vessels, they said. The vessels would give the Navy a niche capability in the underwater domain. It would also help the force to carry out multiple operations, former Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral SN Ghormade said when asked about the capability.

The US has decided to sell High Altitude Anti-Submarine Warfare (HAASW) sonobuoys worth USD 52.8 million to India, a move that would enhance New Delhi’s capacity to conduct anti-submarine warfare operations.

Sonobuoys are air-launched, expendable, electro-mechanical sensors designed to relay underwater sounds to remote processors. These are effective and affordable antisubmarine warfare (ASW) that are capable of being used by airborne ASW warfighters.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi commended the central government’s border area development vision while addressing the Border Area Development Conclave in the national capital on Wednesday. General Dwivedi said that the vision for border area development is bold, ambitious and deeply rooted in the principles of inclusivity, sustainability and security. He described the border area development as a core component of national security.

“Indian Army’s efforts in the past have contributed immensely towards model villages in border areas, border tourism and developing infrastructure support, including medical support, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. The border area development vision is bold, ambitious and deeply rooted in the principles of inclusivity, sustainability & security,” the Army Chief said.

An IAF contingent comprising MiG-29s, Jaguars and C-17s is ready to set course to participate in Exercise Eastern Bridge in Oman. This is the seventh edition of the Exercise that is scheduled from 11 to 22 September 2024 at Air Force base Masirah, Oman.

The bilateral exercise endeavors to enhance interoperability between Royal Oman Air Force and the Indian Air Force and shall provide a platform for both teams to engage in a series of joint training missions designed to strengthen strategic cooperation and operational readiness.

Exercise Tarang Shakti-24 is one of the largest multinational air exercise being conducted by the Indian Air Force in Jodhpur. On the sidelines of this exercise, lAF will also host the India Defence Aviation Exposition IDAX-24 which will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Raksha Mantri on 12 Sep 24.

This edition of IDAX at Jodhpur, scheduled from 12-14 Sep 24, will have a grand participation from industry and host a wide range of products, technologies. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has voiced Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi-led Government’s full commitment to the holistic development of border villages, describing them as the country’s first villages, and not remote areas. Addressing the Border Area Development Conclave in New Delhi on September 11, 2024, the Raksha Mantri pointed out that India’s geo-strategic position is such that it is exposed to different kinds of challenges and the best way to deal with them is to ensure border area development.

Highlighting the progress achieved in border area development in the last 10 years, Shri Rajnath Singh said: “Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed over 8,500 kms of roads and more than 400 permanent bridges. Atal Tunnel, Sela Tunnel & Shikun-La Tunnel, which is going to be the world’s highest tunnel, will prove to be milestones in border area development. Our Government has started the 220 Kilo-Volt Srinagar-Leh Electricity Line to connect the border areas of Ladakh with the National Electricity Grid. In addition, the transmission and distribution infrastructure of north-eastern states is being strengthened. High-speed internet has been provided to over 1,500 villages through the Bharat-Net broadband project. In the last four years alone, more than 7,000 border villages have been connected with internet connection, and our focus has been Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.”

National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval on Wednesday attended the BRICS National Security Advisers meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The meeting of BRICS and BRICS Plus High-Level Security Officials is being held in St. Petersburg from September 10-12.

The Indian Embassy in Russia shared some pictures of the Bricks meeting on X and stated, “NSA Shri Ajit Doval is participating in the BRICS NSAs meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia. During the sessions in the first half of the day, he spoke on modern security challenges, including ICT ( information and communication technology) related issues and terrorism, and the need to address them through joint efforts within the BRICS framework.”

Two terrorists have been killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Wednesday, the Army said. In a post on X, the Rising Star Corps of the Indian Army said, “Two Terrorists Neutralised in the Ongoing Operation at Khandara #Kathua by Troops of Rising Star Corps. Operations in progress.”
