The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been given the green light to develop two new variants of the Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MRBL) system for the Indian Army. One variant will have a range of 150 kilometers, while the other will boast a range of 250 kilometers or more.
The decision to develop these new Pinaka MRBL variants comes in response to the growing demand for the RAMPAGE air-launched rocket system, which is of Israeli origin. The DRDO aims to design the next-generation Pinaka MRBLs with the capability of being launched from fighter jets such as the Jaguar, Su-30, and Mirage-2000.
The smaller dimensions of the Pinaka MRBLs will make them ideal for air launch from fighter jets, providing the required stand-off range. The RAMPAGE missile offers long-range supersonic precision strikes with high survivability, making it an effective weapon for targeting key infrastructure from various aircraft platforms.
In today’s modern warfare, low-cost options are essential. The DRDO’s development of the new Pinaka MRBL variants aligns with this requirement. By providing a domestic alternative to the RAMPAGE missile, the DRDO can reduce India’s reliance on foreign imports and save valuable resources.
The development of the new Pinaka MRBL variants is a significant step forward for India’s defense capabilities. These advanced weapon systems will provide the Indian Army with a powerful and versatile tool for neutralizing threats and ensuring national security.
