Defence expert Ranesh Rajan while speaking to idrw.org has cautioned India to be wary of shell companies expressing interest in purchasing T-72 tanks from the country. This warning comes as the Indian Army prepares to retire and potentially export several hundred T-72s amidst a global rise in demand for tanks.

The Indian Army currently operates around 2,500 T-72 tanks, some dating back to the late 1970s. These tanks have served alongside over 1,000 T-90s. This once made India the world’s largest operator of both tank classes, which benefit from significant interoperability due to the T-90 being a modernized derivative of the T-72.

Mr. Igor V. Vilnit, CEO of Rubin Design Bureau, Russia, has expressed a willingness to collaborate with Indian industry and the Navy on Project 75I, aligning with India’s “Make in India” and “Self-Reliant India” policies.

In 2022, Russia withdrew from the Indian Navy’s tender for the construction of six advanced submarines under Project 75I, citing an inability to meet the project’s stringent terms and conditions. The estimated cost of the project was over ?40,000 crore.

In a significant boost to domestic defense manufacturing, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has selected MKU’s NETRO NB-3101 Aviation Night Vision Goggles (ANVG) for the LCH Prachand platform. This marks the first time the IAF has chosen an indigenous ANVG for this advanced helicopter.

The decision to select the NETRO NB-3101 follows the IAF’s positive experience with the ANVG initially developed for the Mi-17 helicopters. The high-quality performance and reliability of the MKU-developed ANVG impressed the IAF, leading to its selection for the LCH Prachand.

The Indian Army is set to take a significant step forward in its modernization efforts with the initiation of trials for the much-anticipated Mounted Gun System (MGS) next year. This has been confirmed by Lt. Gen. Adosh Kumar, Director General of Artillery in the Indian Army. The Mounted Gun System, a crucial component of India’s artillery upgrade plans, is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the Army’s firepower and mobility, particularly in challenging terrains.

Last year, India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, gave the green light for the procurement of the MGS. The approval marked a critical milestone in the modernization of the Army’s artillery regiments, aligning with the government’s “Make in India” initiative to indigenously develop advanced military hardware. The MGS will be based on the 155 mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), a state-of-the-art gun system developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed ambitious plans to land its next-generation launch vehicle, the NGLV or “Soorya,” on a barge at sea. This innovative approach aims to reduce costs and improve the sustainability of India’s space program.

The NGLV represents a major technological advancement for India, offering a payload capacity three times that of the current LVM3 rocket while only increasing costs by 50%. A key feature of the NGLV is its reusability, which promises to significantly lower the cost of space access. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has rejected 20,000 visa applications from Bangladeshis and returned passports.  This decision follows widespread protests and threats directed at the high commission, according to Times of India.

The visa services for Bangladeshi citizens have been suspended indefinitely, leaving many applicants in limbo. Randhir Jaiswal, the ministry’s spokesperson, said that visas are currently being issued for medical and emergency reasons only. Full visa services will resume once the situation in Bangladesh normalises.

The 8th edition of India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2024 commenced today, at Surya Foreign Training Node, Auli, Uttarakhand. The exercise is scheduled to be conducted from 30th September to 13th October 2024. Joint Exercise KAZIND-2024 has been held annually since 2016. Last edition of the Joint Exercise was held at Otar, Kazakhstan from 30th October to 11th November 2023.

The Indian Armed Forces, comprising 120 personnel, are being represented by a battalion of the KUMAON Regiment of Indian Army, along with other arms and services, as well as personnel from Indian Air Force. The Kazakhstan contingent will be represented mainly by personnel from Land Forces and Air Borne Assault Troopers.

At least three Iranian border security guards have been killed and several others injured in fresh violence that has erupted in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-Baluchistan area, bordering Pakistan’s Balochistan province.

Four different attacks were reported overnight from different cities along the Pak-Iran border on Monday. “An Iranian border guard was killed and two others sustained injuries in a clash with unidentified armed persons in the Parud intersection of the Rask district of Iran’s Sistan-va-Balochistan province,” confirmed a source.

Speaking to reporters here, Parameshwara said, “As per the information available they have been living in India for 10 years. They came down and settled in Bengaluru a year ago. They have been taken into custody and will be investigated. They will be questioned on why they came to Bengaluru. How did they manage to get documents?

An Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in a lake at Karapanahalli village in Kolar district’s Bangarapet taluk on Monday. The incident occurred due to a technical glitch, but fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

Three pilots, including a woman pilot, were on a training mission when the technical issues arose, forcing them to execute an emergency landing. The helicopter, which belongs to the IAF’s Yelahanka Air Force station, was conducting a training sortie near KGF, Bangarapet, and surrounding areas.

As many as 24 Indian fisherfolk perished in Pakistan prisons in the past 10 years, as per a reply under RTI received by a Mumbai-based activist Jatin Desai, here on Monday. Citing the official data for the period January 2014 to December 2023, the RTI reply from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad revealed that a total of 24 have died in Pakistan’s jail custody.

One fisher, Vinod Laxman from Palghar district (Maharashtra), passed away on March 17 and his body was sent back home on May 1, this year, for the last rites.

Security forces on Monday extended the ongoing search operations to new areas in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and Rajouri districts to hunt down terrorists following recent encounters in the region, officials said.

A policeman and a terrorist were killed and two police officers were injured in a fierce gunbattle in the remote Kog-Mandli forest village in Billawar tehsil of Kathua district on Saturday evening and a brief exchange of fire took place between terrorists and security forces in Manial Gali in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district on Sunday evening.
