The latest visuals from October 2023 reveal a significant change in the hardpoint configuration of the TEDBF: the Astra missile pylons, which were previously located under the fuselage, have been relocated to the wing root position. This strategic adjustment raises several questions about the underlying reasons and potential benefits.

One of the primary reasons for shifting the Astra pylons to the wing root position is likely related to structural integrity and load distribution. The wing root is a structurally robust part of the aircraft, capable of handling greater stress and load. By relocating the missile pylons to this position, the overall stress on the fuselage is reduced, which can improve the aircraft’s durability and lifespan. This change also ensures that the center of gravity remains optimal, contributing to better flight stability and control.

As India celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pokhran-I and the 26th anniversary of Pokhran-II, it faces a rapidly evolving global security environment that necessitates a reassessment of its nuclear strategy. The United States’ withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty has further destabilized the international arms control regime, creating a need for India to consider advancing its nuclear capabilities through a potential Pokhran-III test series.

Pokhran-I in 1974, codenamed “Smiling Buddha,” marked India’s entry into the nuclear club, establishing its scientific and technological prowess. In 1998, Pokhran-II, under “Operation Shakti,” solidified India’s status as a nuclear-armed state capable of strategic deterrence. These tests laid the foundation for India’s nuclear doctrine based on credible minimum deterrence.

The nation can still recall how Punjab was caught in the grip of terrorism in the latter 1980s that could be countered only through sustained use of armed police, socio-political efforts at restoring peace and the diplomatic initiatives taken for mobilising world opinion against the call of ‘Khalistan’.

The environment of hurt feelings amongst Sikhs created by Op Blue Star at the Golden Temple, the rise of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as the fulcrum of the ‘Khalistan movement’ in the state, and the full exploitation of the situation by Pakistan which pumped in arms, explosives and trained militants into Punjab had all combined at that time to push the level of terrorist violence all over the state to an unprecedented high with things coming to a pass where people in Chandigarh and Mohali stopped leaving their houses after sunset.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has said people are identifying themselves with his party’s campaign as it is talking about factors important to them: the sense of ”betrayal” since August 5, 2019 and their issues remaining unaddressed in the absence of a popular government since 2018.

Abdullah, who is contesting from the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, accuses the ”BJP and agencies” of riding ”multiple horses in this race to see which one can ultimately damage the National Conference”. Overwhelmed by people’s enthusiastic response to his roadshows and rallies, especially in areas hitherto dominated by the separatist ideology, the NC vice president said the BJP’s tactics in various constituencies indicated a calculated approach to secure advantages through alliances against his party.
