Australia expelled two Indian spies in 2020 for allegedly trying to “steal secrets” about sensitive defence projects and airport security, the Australian media reported on Tuesday. While The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald said two Indian spies were booted out, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) did not mention any number.

There was no immediate comment from Indian officials on the Australian media reports. “Indian spies were kicked out of Australia after being caught trying to steal secrets about sensitive defence projects and airport security, as well as classified information on Australia’s trade relationships,” the ABC report said.

Shortly after assuming charge as the 26th Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi on Tuesday said the Navy should remain operationally ready at all times to deter potential adversaries in view of the emerging challenges in the maritime domain.

Admiral Tripathi, regarded as a communication and electronic warfare specialist, took the reins of the force following the retirement of incumbent R Hari Kumar after a career spanning four decades. An alumnus of the Sainik School Rewa, Admiral Tripathi was serving as the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

Amid a crackdown by security forces on Left Wing Extremism, at least 16 Naxals, including the two carrying a cumulative bounty of Rs 13 lakh on their heads, surrendered in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.

Among them, Arun Kadti (21) was a member of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) Battalion No. 1 of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), said Bijapur Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Yadav. Kadti, who carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head, was involved in the 2024 attack on security forces in Tekulagudem in Sukma in which three CRPF personnel were killed and 14 others injured, he said.

At least 10 Maoists, including three female members, have been killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur Narayanpur-Kanker Border on Tuesday, officials said. According to the police, a joint party of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Special Task Force (STF) jawans had left for a Maoist operation in Abujmarh of the Narayanpur and Kanker border area on Monday.

The encounter between Maoists and a joint security team of the DRG and the STF broke out in a forest at around 6 am today. “During the operation, an encounter took place between the police party and Maoists in the forest between the village Tekmeta and Kakur at 6 am on April 30. During the search of the incident site after the encounter, bodies of a total of 10 Maoist cadres including 3 female Maoists have been recovered, which are being identified,” it added.

India ranked as the third-largest country globally for phishing attacks after the US and UK, with its technology sector facing nearly 33 per cent of all such strikes, marking it as the most targeted industry, according to a report.

The report by cybersecurity firm Zscaler showed a 60 per cent rise in global phishing attacks over the past year. The ThreatLabz 2024 Phishing Report gathered insights from 2 billion blocked phishing transactions between January and December 2023.
