Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has confirmed that the first of the Project-17 Alpha stealth frigates, INS Nilgiri, will be delivered to the Indian Navy sometime next year. The remaining three ships in the series will be delivered once per year, with the final delivery expected in 2026.

The Project-17A frigates are among the most advanced warships currently under construction in India. They are designed to provide the Indian Navy with a potent platform for anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface warfare. The frigates are equipped with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and modern platform management systems.

With a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and a top speed of 28 knots, the Project-17A frigates are capable of neutralizing threats in all three dimensions: air, surface, and underwater. Their advanced sensors and weapons systems allow them to engage multiple targets simultaneously, making them a formidable force in the maritime domain.

The in-house design of the Project-17A frigates by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in warship design and construction. The frigates are being built by two of India’s leading shipyards, MDL and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

The delivery of the first Project-17 Alpha stealth frigate next year marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to modernize its naval capabilities and enhance its maritime defence posture. These advanced warships will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and ensuring the security of its coastline.
