India’s ambitious plan to procure MQ-9B drones, initially met with skepticism due to their high cost, has gained significant traction within the Indian military thanks to the successful performance of two leased units. This development could mark a turning point in India’s defense capabilities, particularly for maritime surveillance and border security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and along the Himalayan border with China.
The proposal to acquire MQ-9B drones, carrying a hefty price tag of over $100 million per unit, faced resistance from both the Indian Army and Air Force. However, the deployment of two leased MQ-9Bs by the Indian Navy reportedly played a pivotal role in changing their perspective.
These leased drones reportedly provided “crystal clear images” of Chinese military activity across the Line of Actual Control (LAC), aiding in crucial intelligence gathering and enabling the Indian Army to effectively counter Chinese troop build-up in the region. This success story convinced the Army and Air Force of the drone’s potential, paving the way for a larger procurement plan.
The Modi government has now confirmed the procurement of 31 MQ-9B drones: 15 Sea Guardians for the Navy and 16 Sky Guardians (8 each) for the Army and Air Force. This decision represents a significant investment of approximately $4 billion and is expected to significantly enhance India’s defense capabilities in various ways:
- Enhanced Maritime Surveillance: The Sea Guardians will bolster the Navy’s ability to monitor the vast expanse of the IOR, deterring illegal activities and ensuring regional security.

Despite the potential benefits, some concerns remain:
