In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian defense technology, C J Varghese, a Kerala-based innovator with a remarkable portfolio of six patents to his name, has been granted a patent by the Patent Office of the Government of India. This significant milestone marks the invention of a pioneering “Rapid Responding Active Protection System,” set to redefine the landscape of defense mechanisms and bolster the safety of armored vehicle crews for the next two decades.

Varghese’s latest invention promises to be a game-changer in the world of defense technology. His active protection system, often referred to as a “hard-kill shooter system,” has been meticulously crafted to provide protection for tanks and light armored vehicles against imminent threats, such as RPGs (Rocket-Propelled Grenades) and ATGMs (Anti-Tank Guided Missiles).

At its core, the system integrates cutting-edge technology to deliver rapid responses to incoming threats. This includes a tracking and control system that accurately identifies the trajectory of oncoming threats and guides the active defense mechanism to effectively neutralize them. Typically, this involves launching projectiles, commonly in the form of Munition with Enhanced Fragmentation Penetrator (MEFP), directly towards the approaching threat.

The significance of Varghese’s invention lies not only in its advanced technology but also in its potential to safeguard the lives of armored vehicle crews. By offering an active defense system capable of intercepting and neutralizing threats in real-time, it significantly reduces the vulnerability of these vehicles and the safety of their operators.

What sets Varghese’s active protection system apart is its exceptional versatility. Unlike existing APS (Active Protection Systems), Varghese’s creation has the capability to track and aim at targets with higher elevation angles. This feature is particularly valuable for countering drone-delivered munitions and airborne threats that frequently employ top-attack modes to target main battle tanks or armored personnel carriers (APCs).

In simpler terms, Varghese’s system not only protects against ground-launched threats but also extends its capabilities to tackle aerial threats that pose a significant challenge to traditional defense systems.

C J Varghese’s accomplishments in the realm of defense innovation are not only commendable but also a testament to the untiring spirit of innovation in India. His unwavering dedication and creative thinking have led to the development of a system with the potential to enhance the security of defense personnel and assets.
