The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program, aimed at acquiring 114 new fighter jets, appears to be facing delays. While the last major update came from Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari in October 2023, significant progress seems to be lacking.
Considering the complexities involved, a finalized deal and first deliveries are unlikely before 2030. Let’s take the 36 Rafale jets acquired from France as an example. The initial agreement was signed in 2016, but the first deliveries only occurred in late 2019, and the entire fleet arrived by December 2022 – a process exceeding six years.
Even with a positive outlook, the first MRFA deliveries are unlikely before 2030. Let’s consider the 36 Rafale deal with France for perspective. Negotiations spanned several years, with the final deliveries completed in December 2022 – over six years after the initial agreement.
The MRFA program faces several hurdles:
- Selection Process: Finalizing the chosen aircraft type with eight contenders in the race can be a lengthy procedure.
- Contract Negotiation: Negotiating a complex contract with a foreign manufacturer or government (G2G) can be time-consuming.
- “Make in India” Integration: Integrating indigenous weaponry and adhering to “Make in India” provisions can add further complexity.
Even with an optimistic timeline of a signed deal by 2026, the best-case scenario for the first MRFA delivery wouldn’t be before 2029. This delay could impact the IAF’s combat readiness, highlighting the need for potential solutions like exploring options for quicker acquisition of fighter jets alongside pursuing the MRFA program.
