India is gearing up to conduct the first flight test of a tube-launched loitering munition, which was showcased by a private sector drone startup company based in Bengaluru at last year’s Defence Expo. The manufacturer plans to launch the munition from a disposable tube launcher that can be easily equipped with a serviceman’s gear.

This lightweight munition, weighing less than 7 kilograms, is designed for a range of over 30 kilometres and has an impressive endurance of 45-60 minutes. It can be armed with high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) and thermobaric warheads, making it a versatile and effective weapon system.

The tube-launched loitering munition offers various capabilities that make it a valuable asset for the Indian Armed Forces. Equipped with an electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR) payload, it enables target identification and facilitates intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Additionally, it can effectively acquire and engage enemy forces, making it a versatile tool for modern warfare scenarios.

The tube-launched loitering munition will be deployed using a disposable tube launcher, which offers ease of use and portability. This launcher can be equipped with a serviceman’s gear, allowing for quick deployment in various operational scenarios. The disposable nature of the launcher enhances its practicality and reduces logistical complexities.
