India’s defence capabilities are set to receive a significant boost as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) prepares to conduct trials of the HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) missiles. These advanced missiles were originally ordered from France to equip the Rafale fighter jets, but they have now been selected for integration into India’s indigenously developed LCA Tejas fighter jets as well.

The HAMMER missiles have gained prominence in the Indian defence arsenal after fresh orders were placed in 2021 for their procurement, extending beyond the initial purchase of the Rafale jets. HAL, one of India’s premier aerospace and defence organizations, has taken on the task of incorporating these powerful munitions into the LCA Tejas fighter aircraft.

The development process has reached a significant milestone, with HAL completing shroud separation on the HAMMER missile. This critical step was achieved using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), a cutting-edge technology that simulates fluid flow and other dynamic processes. The successful shroud separation paves the way for the upcoming trials of the HAMMER missiles, which will assess their performance and integration with the LCA Tejas fighter jets.

The addition of HAMMER missiles to India’s defence arsenal holds immense strategic importance, particularly in high-altitude regions such as Eastern Ladakh. These missiles, initially designed and manufactured for the French Air Force and Navy, offer an exceptional medium-range air-to-ground capability. Their advanced technology and precision targeting capabilities make them suitable for taking out bunkers, hardened shelters, and other strategic targets in various terrains, including mountainous areas like Eastern Ladakh.

The integration of HAMMER missiles into the LCA Tejas fighter jets will further bolster India’s defence capabilities, providing the Indian Air Force with a versatile and effective weapon system. The LCA Tejas, a state-of-the-art indigenous fighter aircraft, is known for its agility, combat readiness, and advanced avionics. With the inclusion of the HAMMER missiles, fighter jets will be empowered to execute missions with enhanced efficiency, precision, and versatility.
