Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) marked a significant milestone on March 2nd, 2024, with the steel cutting ceremony for the world’s first zero-emission feeder container vessel powered by green hydrogen fuel cells. This groundbreaking project, undertaken for Samskip, a leading Netherlands-based logistics company, represents a major leap forward in sustainable maritime transportation.

The ceremony, held at CSL’s premises, coincided with Samskip’s sustainability day celebrations at their headquarters in Rotterdam. This symbolic alignment highlights the shared commitment towards a cleaner future for the shipping industry.

The vessels, designed to carry approximately 365 high-cube 40-foot containers, will boast a length of 138 meters, a width of 23 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 8,000 tonnes. In “zero emission mode,” each vessel is expected to achieve a remarkable reduction of around 25,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This translates to a significant contribution in combating climate change and fostering a greener maritime environment.
