Four months have passed since Qatar granted pardons to eight former Indian naval officers, with seven returning home. However, one officer, Commander Purnendu Tiwary, remains detained in Doha. His sister, Meetu Bhargava, has made an urgent appeal to government authorities for his immediate return.
n a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Meetu Bhargava wrote:
“Humbly Request kind Intervention of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, His Highness Emir of Qatar & Hon’ble EAM of India for kindly facilitating the immediate return of 8th Navy Veteran Cdr Purnendu Tiwary though released but still in Doha for nearly now five months.”
She emphasized the toll this prolonged detention is taking on their family, particularly their 86-year-old mother:
“Moreover, since His Highness has pardoned everyone, there is no reason for him to be in Doha as now his 86-year-old mother is becoming restless with each passing day as the other 7 navy veterans have returned to India on 12th February itself.”
This plea comes ahead of an official visit to Qatar by India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, scheduled for June 30th. The visit presents a critical opportunity for diplomatic intervention to resolve this distressing situation.
