India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is making strides in improving the mobility of its Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VLSRSAM) launcher. This involves crucial modifications to certain subsystems with the aim of weight reduction.

The VLSRSAM is a state-of-the-art air defense system designed to counter low-altitude aerial threats like aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. It utilizes vertical launch technology, allowing for rapid deployment and launch from mobile platforms.

DRDO recognizes the importance of a launcher’s mobility in air defense scenarios. By strategically modifying specific subsystems of the VLSRSAM launcher, they aim to achieve significant weight reduction. This will translate to several advantages:

  • Enhanced Deployment: A lighter launcher can be deployed more swiftly and efficiently, ensuring faster response times in critical situations.
  • Greater Maneuverability: Reduced weight improves the launcher’s maneuverability, allowing for easier positioning and operation on uneven terrain.
  • Strategic Flexibility: A lighter launcher broadens the operational possibilities. It can be integrated onto various platforms, including trailers or even naval vessels, expanding its deployment options.

Once deployed, the VL-SRSAM system will prove to be a force multiplier for the Indian Navy.
