Embraer Defence & Security is actively monitoring developments in India and engaging in discussions with various Indian entities, including both government and private stakeholders. These discussions pertain to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) project. Joao Bosco da Costa Junior, the President and CEO of Embraer Defence & Security, has confirmed the company’s interest in participating in this project.
Embraer has responded to the IAF’s Request for Information (RFI) for 40-80 Medium Transport Aircraft, offering its C-390 Millennium aircraft for consideration. The company is committed to selecting an Indian partner by the end of this year, a crucial step in forging collaboration with the Indian defence industry.
The C-390 Millennium is a versatile aircraft capable of carrying a payload of up to 27 tons. In its proposal, Embraer has expressed its willingness to provide Transfer of Technology (ToT) for the C-390 Millennium aircraft. Furthermore, the company has hinted at sharing certain Intellectual Property (IP) rights related to the aircraft as part of the collaboration with the IAF.
To demonstrate the capabilities of the C-390 Millennium, Embraer has offered the aircraft for in-country demonstrations in India. Earlier this year, the aircraft was showcased at Aero India 2023, where it was available for static display. Additionally, the aircraft was presented to IAF officials to familiarize them with its features and potential benefits.
Embraer’s interest in the IAF’s MTA project adds another dimension to the competition for this significant defence contract. Lockheed Martin has proposed its C-130J Super Hercules, while Airbus has offered its A-400 aircraft. The selection of a capable partner for the MTA project is of strategic importance for India as it seeks to enhance its defence capabilities and strengthen its indigenous defence industry.
