TATA Advanced Systems (TATA Aerospace & Defence) has confirmed a major milestone in the “Make in India” initiative by announcing the first flight of the indigenously manufactured C-295 aircraft from the Final Assembly Line (FAL) at Vadodara, Gujarat, in 2026. This development comes as part of a landmark deal signed between Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL) in 2021, which will witness the acquisition of 56 C-295s to replace the aging British-era Hawker Siddeley HS 748.

The agreement stipulates that 16 C-295 aircraft will be directly procured from Spain, while the remaining 40 will be meticulously manufactured at Vadodara, marking a significant leap in India’s domestic capabilities and fostering innovation in the aerospace sector.

The C-295 is a versatile and robust medium transport aircraft, renowned for its ability to cater to a wide array of missions and challenging terrains. With its exceptional performance, payload capacity, and adaptability, the C-295 is ideal for military and humanitarian operations alike. India’s decision to acquire these aircraft is a testament to its commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities and strengthening its strategic airlift and transport capabilities.

Under this historic partnership, Airbus Defence and Space is transferring the entire technology of C-295 to TASL, allowing the Indian entity to become self-reliant in the production and maintenance of these sophisticated aircraft. TASL will be responsible for the indigenous manufacturing of the C-295, with the exception of specific components sourced from external suppliers, such as engines and avionics.

The transfer of technology will empower TASL to undertake the complete lifecycle of C-295 production, from assembly to final delivery, ensuring that the aircraft is “Made in India” with the highest standards of quality and precision.
