A Predator drone operated by the Indian Navy suffered a technical failure and crashed into the sea off the Chennai coast last week. The incident occurred during a routine surveillance mission on Wednesday afternoon.

The drone, an MQ-9B Predator leased from the American firm General Atomics, experienced a malfunction in its power generators and onboard batteries. Despite attempts to resolve the issue in flight, the drone’s crew was unable to restore its systems. To prevent further damage or potential hazards, the drone was deliberately guided to a safe area over the sea, where it was ditched in a controlled manner.

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora in the United States, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the banned Sikh For Justice (SFJ) and a designated Khalistani terrorist, released a 90-second video issuing threats against Indian-American citizens.

Pannun accused Indian-American Hindus who participated in Modi’s reception of “treason” and demanded that they leave the United States. He labeled them as “followers of Modi’s violent Hindutva ideology” and reiterated the SFJ’s goal of “Balkanizing India through a Khalistan referendum.”

In a significant development, French aircraft maker Dassault Aviation is to set up a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Noida to provide support to the French-origin fighter jets in the Indian Air Force. The Indian Air Force operates around 50 Mirage-2000 aircraft inducted in the 1980s and 36 Rafale fighter aircraft inducted in the last few years.

“The French firm recently informed the Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force about setting up a new Indian company Dassault Aviation Maintenance Repair and Overhaul India (DAMROI) to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul support for the French-origin fighter aircraft in India,” defence officials told ANI. Dassault informed the Defence Ministry that it is setting up the new MRO company in line with India’s vision of Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) and would be opening the facility in one of industrial sectors of NOIDA in UP, they said.

Jaishankar held a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, marking the first high-level engagement between India and Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus after Sheikh Hasina’s ouster as Prime Minister, last month.

The meeting focused on “strengthening” the bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries and addressed mutual interests. “Had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain of Bangladesh in New York this evening. The conversation focussed on our bilateral ties,” EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
