In a setback for India’s Tejas Mk-1A fighter program, GE Aerospace has confirmed that the delivery of two F404-IN20 engines, originally scheduled for later this month, has been pushed back to November. This delay adds to the ongoing challenges faced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in procuring the necessary engines for the production of the Tejas Mk-1A.

The Tejas Mk-1A, a more advanced variant of the Tejas light combat aircraft, made its maiden flight in March this year with Category B reserved engines. HAL had been relying on GE Aerospace to supply 16 engines for the current financial year. However, due to production constraints, the delivery schedule was revised, and GE Aerospace committed to providing six engines before the end of March 2025.

In a significant development, Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari of the Indian Air Force (IAF) emphasized the urgent need to ramp up the production capabilities for India’s home-grown fighter jet, like Tejas MkII, to meet the IAF’s increasing demand. Speaking on Thursday, Chaudhari highlighted the importance of expanding assembly lines and called for greater collaboration with the private sector.

“The way forward is to diversify the production lines, have more public-private partnerships or joint ventures with private partners to establish multiple production lines. This is the way to catch up with our requirement,” Chaudhari stated.

One of the key highlights of the Brazilian Air Force’s visit is their interest in acquiring new helicopters for various roles. Brazil has a requirement for 24 helicopters, which could include a new squadron specifically for operations in the Amazon region and for flood relief missions. Given Brazil’s vast and diverse terrain, a versatile fleet of helicopters is crucial for the country’s military operations, especially for conducting search and rescue missions, medical evacuations, and providing relief during natural disasters.

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Thursday told President Vladimir Putin that PM Narendra Modi had told him to personally brief the Russian President about the talks he had held with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Aug 23. During a meeting with the Russian President in Konstantinovsky Palace in St Petersburg, Doval said: “PM told said he is keen to brief you about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Zelenskyy.

And he wanted me to come specially and personally and brief you about the talks. The talks was in a very closed format; it was only the two leaders. “He (Zelenskyy) had his two persons with him, and I happened to be with the PM; so I was a witness to that, I attended the conversation,” Doval is seen telling President Putin, according to a video shared on social media by Sputnik.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that over 45 Indians were discharged from the Russian military and efforts were on to secure the release of 50 more Indians.

Out of 45 Indian nationals, 35 were discharged after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a media briefing. During his visit to Moscow in July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin following which Russia decided to discharge all Indians working in the Russian army.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proposing a bilateral meeting on October 22, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan. During the invitation, Putin also referred to PM Modi as a “good friend.”

The remarks by Putin came while he met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting. Putin had a meeting with Doval at the Constantine Palace in Russia’s St. Petersberg.

While reaffirming support for a permanent seat for India, the US is calling for text-based negotiations for reform of the UN Security Council giving an impetus to the stalled process, according to Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

“The United States supports engaging in text-based negotiations on Council reform,” she said on Thursday. “It’s actually a big deal. It means we’re ready to work with other countries to negotiate language, prepare amendments, and ready this resolution for a vote in the General Assembly, and ultimately amend the UN Charter.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday that a reason why BRICS was formed was that G7 nations were not letting anyone else enter the group and that the forum of major emerging economies has gained a life of its own. “Because there was another club, it was called the G7 and you wouldn’t let anybody else into that club, so we said we’d go and form our own club. As it started, it gained a life of its own over the period of time.

Others saw value in it as well,” Jaishankar said while answering queries during an interaction at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy in Switzerland. Jaishankar was answering queries from former Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, Jean David Levitte. “We expanded the BRICS, we took the decision to expand the BRICS last year in South Africa’s Johannesburg. And we extended invitations to more countries, which virtually doubled the number.

Security forces on Wednesday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from a forest area in the Keran sector along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.  Based on specific intelligence inputs, a joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police was launched in Keran Sector, Kupwara, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Indian Army posted on X. 

Searches in the indicated area have led to the recovery of a very large cache of arms ammunition and explosives including AK 47 rounds, hand grenades, RPG rounds, material for Improvised Explosive Devices and other war-like stores, it said.
