The Defence Ministry is currently reviewing a proposal to create a National Aerospace Testing Establishment (NATE) to streamline and consolidate testing and evaluation of all aerospace platforms, including aircraft, helicopters, drones, and airborne weapons. NATE aims to be a “single-window” entity for private sector engagement, from design to final certification, potentially reducing lengthy prototype development cycles.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has spearheaded the initiative, leveraging its existing expertise through the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and the Air Force Test Pilots School (AFTPS) in Bengaluru. The proposal, submitted to the Ministry of Defence’s Department of Military Affairs, led by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, is expected to enhance testing efficiency across all branches of Indian aviation, including military and commercial ventures.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has long been on a quest to strengthen its squadron levels to meet growing defense requirements. Among the candidates that have been floated as viable options for India’s multirole fighter jet procurement, Lockheed Martin’s F-35A has emerged as an appealing choice due to its advanced capabilities and established production infrastructure. However, several critical challenges are currently hindering the feasibility of a swift acquisition, even if the IAF places an order.
Lockheed Martin’s F-35 production line, responsible for delivering the F-35A variant, has been at full capacity to meet a slew of backlogged and incoming orders. An IAF official, speaking with IDRW.org, clarified that even if India were to place an order for 60-70 units of the F-35A in 2025, the expected delivery timeline would not see any aircraft arriving until at least 2030.

India’s upcoming S5-class of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) represents a significant leap in the country’s strategic defense capabilities, potentially altering the global balance of nuclear power. With an estimated displacement of over 13,000 tons, a planned arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), and enhanced stealth capabilities, the S5-class could not only augment India’s nuclear deterrent but also cause strategic concerns for the United States and Europe. This SSBN program signals India’s advancement towards securing a robust and survivable second-strike capability, strengthening its position as a global military power—a development that comes with complex implications for Western nations.
The S5-class submarines are set to be India’s most advanced and powerful SSBNs, enabling a full-fledged sea-based nuclear deterrent as the apex of India’s nuclear triad. Unlike the current Arihant-class SSBNs with a range limitation of their ballistic missiles, the S5-class is expected to deploy longer-range ICBMs like the K-6, giving India the capacity to strike distant targets, including potential adversaries located thousands of kilometers away. This capability extends India’s nuclear reach, pushing the country closer to strategic parity with established nuclear powers.

India’s Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) program represents a critical step in modernizing the nation’s armored vehicle capabilities, aiming to replace the aging T-72 tanks with a more advanced Main Battle Tank (MBT) that can respond to current and future combat scenarios. While the FRCV is expected to include a 120mm gun, as used on most modern MBTs, there is a compelling case for exploring higher-caliber gun options, particularly as global trends in tank development lean toward increased firepower with calibers exceeding 120mm. Adopting a larger caliber could grant the FRCV a crucial edge in firepower, versatility, and combat effectiveness on the modern battlefield.
Over the past few years, there has been a growing interest among the world’s leading tank manufacturers in developing higher-caliber guns for MBTs. Countries including Germany, France, Russia, and China have explored or are actively working on tank guns with calibers larger than the traditional 120mm. These developments are driven by the need to enhance firepower against heavily armored adversaries, increase the lethality of MBTs, and address modern armor advancements that can defeat lower-caliber munitions.
