In a remarkable display of technological prowess, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed the successful combat trial of Varunastra, an indigenously developed ship-launched anti-submarine heavyweight torpedo (HWT). The trial, conducted on June 6, 2023, by the Indian Navy, marked a significant milestone as the torpedo, fired from a submarine, precisely hit an underwater target. This achievement underscores the combat worthiness and capability of Varunastra, showcasing its ability to meet the Navy’s operational requirements.

The combat trial of Varunastra represents a critical phase in the testing and validation of this homegrown anti-submarine torpedo. The successful launch from a submarine and the precise hit on an underwater target validate the torpedo’s performance in real-world scenarios, affirming its reliability and effectiveness in naval operations.

Developed by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Varunastra is equipped with impressive features that make it a formidable anti-submarine warfare tool for the Indian Navy. With a maximum speed of 40 knots and a maximum operating depth of 600 meters, Varunastra boasts a long range and multi-maneuvering capabilities. The torpedo is capable of acoustic homing with a wide look angle, enabling it to track silent targets effectively.

Varunastra stands out with its autonomous advanced guidance algorithms, ensuring precision in targeting. The drift navigational systems incorporated into the torpedo contribute to long-endurance operations, enhancing its reliability over extended missions. These advanced features make Varunastra a versatile and effective tool for countering submarine threats in various naval scenarios.

The ship-launched variant of Varunastra was formally inducted into the Indian Navy on June 26, 2016, by the then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar. The induction ceremony, attended by security advisor Satyam Kumar, marked a significant step toward enhancing India’s maritime capabilities and achieving self-reliance in anti-submarine warfare technology.

The successful combat trial of Varunastra holds strategic importance for the Indian Navy as it reinforces the nation’s commitment to developing indigenous defense capabilities. Varunastra’s performance in real-world scenarios demonstrates its effectiveness in countering submarine threats, providing the Navy with a reliable and advanced anti-submarine warfare tool.
