Suspected armed militants ambushed a team of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s personal security team at Kangpokpi district on Monday resulting in the injury of a security personnel. Police said around 11.15 am an advance team of the chief minister, which was enroute to violence stricken Jiribam was ambushed by some unknown miscreants near K. Sinam village, under New Keithelmanbi PS. The injured personnel was identified as Moirangthem Ajesh.

He was rushed to hospital for treatment. Police said the team left Imphal for Jiribam as the Chief Minister was scheduled to visit the district later. Suspected Kuki militants have launched a series of attacks at various places in the district bordering Assam and so far Kuki militants have torched three police stations, large number of houses belonging to a particular ethnic group.

Manipur Chief Minister has also asked Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh and DGP Manipur to give a detailed report of the situation in Jiribam. Official sources said the Chief Minister’s Office had repeatedly warned the Security Advisor and DGP that Kuki militants were planning to attack in Jiribam district as the national highway passes through the district. All other highways except Imphal Jiribam highway are controlled by Kuki militants and they were planning to attack people belonging to a particular ethnic group so that they could take control of the district.
