Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Defense is highlighting the rapid development of India’s new Light Tank, codenamed Project Zorawar. Arun Ramchandani, Executive Vice President & Head of L&T Defense, claims this project is one of the fastest light tank development programs globally, moving from conception to rollout in just 18 months.
This swift development is attributed to L&T’s prior experience in manufacturing the K-9 Vajra Self-Propelled Howitzer. The K-9 Vajra project provided a strong foundation for the Zorawar Light Tank, accelerating the design and production process.
The Indian Army’s need for Light Tanks arose from heightened tensions with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh. China’s deployment of light tanks in the region prompted the Indian Army to request a similar indigenous solution from DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation). L&T Defense was then chosen as the development partner for Project Zorawar.
The Indian Army has a significant requirement for around 350 Light Tanks, envisioned for deployment in the Ladakh region. These 25-ton tanks are being jointly developed by DRDO and L&T Defense to specifically address the strategic needs of the Ladakh sector.
The Zorawar Light Tank is presently undergoing internal company trials at L&T’s Armored Systems Complex (ASC) in Hazira, Gujarat. These initial trials are crucial for evaluating the tank’s performance and identifying areas for improvement.
Following the successful completion of internal trials, the Light Tank will proceed to summer trials conducted in collaboration with the Indian Army. This stage will involve rigorous testing in hot weather conditions, allowing the Army to assess the tank’s suitability for operational deployment.
The rapid development of the Zorawar Light Tank signifies India’s growing self-reliance in defense technology. If successful, this project will equip the Indian Army with a critical tool to counter threats along the LAC and bolster its overall defense capabilities.
