Lokesh Machines Limited, a leading manufacturer of firearms and ammunition, has achieved a significant milestone by delivering an order of 550 9×19 mm submachine guns (SMGs) known as ASMI to the Northern Command of the Indian Army.
The company secured the order, valued at Rs 4.26 crore, in mid-June 2024. The development of the ASMI SMG was spearheaded by Col Prasad Bansod from the Infantry School, Mhow, with crucial support from the Defense Research and Development Organization’s (DRDO) Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune.
Weighing under 2 kilograms when empty, the ASMI features an 8-inch barrel and a high-capacity 33-round magazine. Its versatile design includes a full-length integral Picatinny rail and M-Lok slots for attaching various accessories.
The ASMI is expected to play a significant role in the Indian Armed Forces, serving as a personnel weapon for vehicle detachments, commanders, tank and aircraft crews, drivers, dispatch riders, radio/radar operators, and in close-quarters combat (CQB), counter-insurgency (CI), and counter-terrorism (CT) operations. Additionally, the ASMI is being considered for use by the National Security Guard (NSG), Assam Rifles, and Border Security Force (BSF), which have received pilot lots and expressed interest in further deployment.
The successful delivery of the ASMI submachine guns to the Indian Army marks a major achievement for Lokesh Machines Limited and highlights the company’s capabilities in manufacturing advanced firearms. This development also underscores the growing indigenous production of defense equipment in India, contributing to the country’s self-reliance and security.
