Kochi-based Smart Engineering & Design Solutions (India) Private Ltd. has been selected by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) to provide design collaboration for the development of India’s crucial Five Fleet Support Ships (FSS) program.

The vessel boasts a diesel propulsion system (CODAD) with a single shaft configuration and CPP (Controllable Pitch Propeller) for efficient operation.

A double bottom and double hull construction in cargo hold areas ensure additional strength and protection. The FSS is specifically designed to extend the range and duration of naval combat missions by providing critical supplies to warships underway, including:

  • Fuel
  • Ammunition
  • Spare parts
  • Provisions
  • Personnel

The 44,000-ton behemoth can transfer fuel to naval vessels while underway using both abeam and stern transfer methods. It is equipped to handle the transfer of all types of stores, provisions, and personnel during sea operations.

The FSS is designed to accommodate multi-role helicopters, further enhancing its operational flexibility. The images released by Smart Engineering & Design Solutions offer the first glimpse of these impressive Fleet Support Ships.

This collaboration between Smart Engineering and HSL marks a significant step forward in the development of India’s naval capabilities. The FSS program will provide the Indian Navy with a critical asset for sustaining operations at sea, ensuring a stronger and more self-reliant maritime force.
