Jindal Stainless Strengthens Indian Navy’s Defense Capabilities with Special Steel for SMART System

Jindal Stainless, India’s leading stainless steel manufacturer, has emerged as a key contributor to the country’s defense sector. The company recently announced the development and successful delivery of 3 mm special alloy steel sheets for the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system.

The specialized steel sheets, indigenously developed by Jindal Defence and Aerospace, a strategic vertical of Jindal Stainless, can withstand the extreme high pressure and high temperature encountered during flight.

Jindal Stainless’ Hisar facility produced these sheets in a record turnaround time, showcasing India’s growing prowess in indigenous defense manufacturing. The SMART system, designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), utilizes these sheets for structural applications.

SMART is a next-generation missile-based system designed for swift and precise torpedo deployment. It carries an advanced lightweight torpedo as its payload and features a parachute-based release mechanism. This system offers launch flexibility, functioning effectively from both coastal locations and warships. The successful test conducted by DRDO validated several state-of-the-art mechanisms within SMART, including symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control.

Jindal Stainless boasts a proven track record of supplying crucial materials for prominent DRDO and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) projects. Their contributions include India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan, PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle), GSLV Mk3 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk3), the Nuclear Submarine missile system, missile canisters for various programs, and exhaust unit applications in rockets. The company remains dedicated to fulfilling the material requirements of upcoming Indian missile programs.
