The Indian Navy’s quest for enhanced underwater capabilities is taking a significant leap forward with the upcoming construction of two nuclear-attack submarines (SSNs). As the government prepares to greenlight the project, a crucial detail has emerged – the inclusion of pump-jet propulsion technology.

Pump-jet propulsion offers a significant advantage over traditional propellers. It reduces noise signature, making the submarines harder to detect by enemy sonar. Additionally, pump jets offer improved efficiency and manoeuvrability, making them ideal for navigating challenging underwater environments.

The French Naval Group has expressed its interest in collaborating with India, offering the pump-jet technology utilized in their Barracuda-class SSNs along with Transfer of Technology (ToT). This would provide India with access to established technology and expedite the development process.

However, the Indian Navy is also pursuing a parallel path, exploring the possibility of developing pump-jet technology indigenously in collaboration with a major Indian engineering company. This approach aligns with India’s focus on achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

The Navy has yet to make a final decision on whether to accept the French offer or opt for domestic development. The project’s target of 95% indigenous content suggests a potential leaning towards local innovation. However, French expertise might still be utilized in a consultant role to ensure smooth integration and technology transfer.

The choice between French collaboration and local development will have a significant impact on the project timeline and cost. Opting for established French technology could lead to a faster operational deployment, while domestic development would represent a long-term investment in indigenous capabilities.

Regardless of the decision, the inclusion of pump-jet propulsion marks a major step forward for the Indian Navy. These next-generation submarines will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, enhancing India’s maritime security and deterrence capabilities.
