In a significant boost to the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has confirmed the successful completion of user trials for the indigenously developed Advanced Lightweight Torpedo (ALWT). This cutting-edge weapon system is set to replace the Navy’s existing MK-46 torpedo.
Designed to be launched from ships, helicopters, or fixed-wing aircraft, the ALWT employs advanced sonar technology to detect and track enemy submarines. Once the target is identified, the torpedo is fired with pre-set parameters to optimize its attack trajectory. To counter the evasive maneuvers of submarines, the ALWT incorporates sophisticated guidance systems for both horizontal and vertical control.
Key features of the ALWT include high speed capabilities, advanced acoustic homing modes, a potent warhead designed to penetrate submarine hulls, and a reliable seawater-activated battery. These attributes position the ALWT as a formidable weapon against modern submarines.
The successful development and testing of the ALWT marks a crucial milestone in India’s self-reliance in defense technology. It is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and contribute to maintaining maritime security in the region.
