In a display of cutting-edge Indian technology, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, witnessed the NRT Nimbus Tether Drone during the integrated Fire Power exercise conducted by the Indian Army at Pokhran on December 23rd. This tethered drone, developed by NewSpace Research and Technologies (NRT), stands as a testament to India’s growing prowess in the realm of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and its commitment to the Make In India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

The NRT Nimbus Tether Drone, equipped with a best-in-class electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) sensor, stole the show with its ability to provide persistent surveillance in both plains and the extreme Super High Altitude Areas (SHAA) environment. This capability makes it a valuable asset for the Indian Army, enhancing its situational awareness and operational effectiveness in diverse terrains.

President Murmu’s review of the NRT Nimbus Tether Drone underscores the significance of this drone technology for national security. The Indian Army has placed a significant order for these drones under a ?250 crore procurement contract, with NRT gearing up to complete the delivery within the next few months. This acquisition marks a major step forward in the Indian Army’s modernization efforts and its reliance on indigenous technologies.

The NRT Nimbus Tether Drone offers several advantages over conventional drones. Its tether provides a continuous power source, enabling it to operate for extended periods without the need for frequent battery replacements. This translates to increased endurance, allowing the drone to maintain its vigil over critical areas for longer durations. Additionally, the tether also serves as a data transfer conduit, ensuring real-time intelligence for troops on the ground.
