In a significant move to bolster its artillery firepower and enhance its capabilities in the event of conflict in the region, the Indian Army has embarked on a mission to develop a cutting-edge long-range, mobile, precision rocket system. This initiative seeks to further strengthen India’s defensive capabilities, ensuring it remains well-prepared to address various potential scenarios in the ever-evolving security landscape.

The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is at the forefront of this project. DRDO has previously showcased its expertise with the development of the Pinaka family of autonomous rocket artillery systems. The Pinaka system has proven highly effective in providing artillery support with precision and reliability.

While the Pinaka artillery systems have already demonstrated their effectiveness, the Army, in collaboration with DRDO, is pushing the boundaries by developing a long-range, mobile, precision rocket system with an impressive tactical range of 300 kilometres. This strategic decision reflects the need to have a robust and versatile tool for engaging high-value targets, including enemy air defence installations, command, control, communications, and intelligence (C3I) centres, logistics and infrastructure facilities, among others.

The development of this 300km long-range rocket system signifies a broader strategy aimed at building a formidable strategic rocket force for India’s defence. This concept has received strong support from former Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, emphasizing the importance of having a versatile and powerful arsenal at India’s disposal.

One of the key advantages of this long-range rocket system is its versatility. It will have the capability to engage a wide range of high-value targets, thereby expanding India’s options in various operational scenarios. Additionally, the cost-effectiveness of this system is a notable feature, making it feasible for mass production. This cost-efficiency ensures that the Indian Army can deploy a significant number of these systems, further bolstering its defensive capabilities.
