The Indian Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) annual report for 2022-23 sheds light on a crucial development for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A program: the Swayam Raksha Kavach Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite. This article explores the details of this vital system and its significance for the LCA Mk1A.

The name “Swayam Raksha Kavach” translates to “Self-Defense Armor,” aptly reflecting the suite’s role in protecting the LCA Mk1A from electronic threats. Developed domestically, the suite integrates cutting-edge technologies to enhance the aircraft’s survivability in modern warfare scenarios.

The Swayam Raksha Kavach EW Suite is a significant upgrade for the LCA Mk1A. It equips the aircraft with the capability to detect and counter a wide range of electronic threats, enhancing its survivability in contested environments. This indigenous development also signifies India’s progress in developing advanced electronic warfare systems for its domestic fighter jets.

Key Components and Capabilities:

  • State-of-the-Art RWR: The EW suite comprises a highly advanced Radar Warning Receiver (RWR). This system boasts four wideband receiver channels, significantly improving the aircraft’s ability to detect and pinpoint the direction of incoming radar signals, both airborne and ground-based.
  • Advanced Self-Protection Jammer (ASPJ): The Swayam Raksha Kavach also incorporates an ASPJ, a powerful electronic countermeasure system. This jammer utilizes Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) technology to disrupt enemy radar by generating targeted jamming signals.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: The RWR offers 360-degree radar warning, ensuring the aircraft is protected from all directions. Additionally, it can handle over a million pulses per second (pps), highlighting its ability to counter sophisticated radar threats.
  • Jamming Prowess: The ASPJ features both High Power Pulse and Continuous Wave (CW) jamming channels, providing flexibility in countering various radar types.

The integration of the Swayam Raksha Kavach EW Suite marks a crucial step forward for the LCA Mk1A program. With this advanced electronic shield in place, the LCA Mk1A is better equipped to fulfil its role as a potent fighter jet for the Indian Air Force.
