In a significant boost to India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a test launch of a Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from a missile test facility off the Odisha coast on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Developed indigenously by DRDO, the VL-SRSAM is a sophisticated air defense system designed to intercept and neutralize aerial threats such as aircraft and drones. The missile is equipped with advanced technology, including a solid propellant rocket motor and a highly maneuverable flight control system.

The test launch, which was conducted against a high-speed aerial target simulating an aircraft, demonstrated the missile’s ability to accurately engage and destroy threats. The missile’s flight path and performance parameters were closely monitored using a network of tracking instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.

Senior officials from DRDO and the Indian Navy were present to witness the successful test launch. The successful demonstration of the VL-SRSAM is a major milestone for India’s defense industry and underscores the country’s growing self-reliance in critical defense technologies.

The development of the VL-SRSAM is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s air defense capabilities and provide a much-needed boost to the country’s overall defense preparedness.
