India has reiterated its support for an early ceasefire in Gaza and a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Wednesday. Speaking at a meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Jaishankar expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and emphasized that any response should comply with international humanitarian law.
“India’s position has been principled and consistent. While we condemn terrorism and hostage-taking, we are deeply pained by the loss of innocent civilian lives. We support an early ceasefire,” Jaishankar stated.
Jaishankar also highlighted India’s continued support for Palestinian development, saying the country had contributed to building Palestinian institutions and capacities. He reiterated India’s commitment to a two-state solution for lasting peace.
During the meeting, the ministers co-chaired the second session of the Committee on Political, Security, Social, and Cultural Cooperation (PSSC), under the Strategic Partnership Council (SPC). Jaishankar called Saudi Arabia an important stabilizing force in the region and praised the growing bilateral ties, particularly in sectors like trade, technology, renewable energy, defense, and health.
Jaishankar noted that both countries are aligned in their ambitions, with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 complementing India’s Viksit Bharat 2047. “Trade and investment are vital pillars of our partnership, and we are expanding collaboration in areas like green hydrogen, energy, and connectivity,” he said.
On defense, Jaishankar highlighted several recent milestones, including the first-ever joint land forces exercise in 2024 and ongoing naval collaborations. Security cooperation is also expanding, with both nations working closely on counter-terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking.
Regional and Global Cooperation
The two sides also discussed global and regional issues, including the G20, BRICS, and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC). Jaishankar emphasized the shared interest in preserving regional stability and promoting economic prosperity.
Fostering Cultural and People-to-People Ties
The meeting also focused on increasing cultural, tourism, and youth exchanges. Jaishankar noted the potential for deeper cooperation in media and entertainment.
He also thanked Saudi Arabia for its support of the 2.6 million-strong Indian community in the kingdom, praising efforts to ensure their welfare.
