The Indian Air Force (IAF) is poised to sign a significant agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the procurement of 240 AL-31F jet engines. These engines will be instrumental in powering the IAF’s formidable fleet of Su-30MKI fighter jets.

The Su-30MKI serves as the backbone of the IAF’s fighter jet fleet. This deal signifies the IAF’s commitment to maintaining the combat readiness and operational efficiency of these crucial aircraft.

Nearly 120 Su-30MKI jets will receive these new engines. These specific aircraft have reached the designated operational lifespan of their current engines. Replacing them is crucial to ensure the jets maintain high sortie rates, maximizing their availability for missions.

While this deal addresses the immediate need for engine replacements, the IAF will revisit the engine procurement process in August. New engines will ensure optimal performance and reliability for the Su-30MKI jets. Replacing aging engines will minimize downtime for maintenance and allow for a higher frequency of operational missions.
