Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), a defense sector undertaking under India’s Ministry of Defence, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Damen Shipyards Group. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Her Excellency Liesje Schreinemacher, the Netherlands’ Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation.

This MoU marks a significant step towards collaboration in the development and deployment of electric tugboats (e-Tugs) for Indian ports. Damen Shipyards Group, a renowned Dutch conglomerate with expertise in shipbuilding, engineering, and defense solutions, brings valuable experience to the table.

The ASD-E Tug 2111 leverages a compact and powerful Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) platform to achieve zero-emission operation thanks to its fully electric propulsion system. Despite its eco-friendly nature, the ASD-E Tug 2111 packs a punch with an impressive bollard pull of 50 tonnes, making it ideal for various harbor tasks.

Damen’s patented Twin Fin skeg and twin Azimuth thrusters ensure exceptional maneuverability, allowing for precise handling even in tight spaces. The ASD-E Tug 2111 prioritizes crew safety with an obstacle-free working deck and a powerful covered winch that facilitates both forward and aft operations.

This collaboration between Goa Shipyard and Damen Shipyards holds immense potential for Indian ports. The MoU paves the way for cleaner and more efficient tugboat operations, contributing to a greener maritime industry in India.
