Dr. Tobias Lindner, Germany’s Minister of State for Federal Foreign Office, recently highlighted growing concerns over China’s assertive behavior and its implications for the rule-based international order. Speaking on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2024, Lindner emphasized the importance of upholding sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principles of peaceful dispute resolution in the face of escalating tensions.

Lindner underscored Germany’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the one and unique rule-based international order, emphasizing the special responsibility borne by United Nations members and the permanent members of the Security Council in preserving global stability and security. Against the backdrop of increasing assertiveness from China, particularly in regions such as Taiwan, the South China Sea, and along the border with India, Lindner stressed the imperative of resolving disputes peacefully and through mutual consent.

The Minister acknowledged India’s proactive stance in the face of regional challenges, including the deployment of ships in strategic waters. In a demonstration of solidarity, Germany announced the deployment of a frigate, currently en route through the Suez Canal after passing through Cyprus, to contribute to efforts aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

The decision to deploy the frigate underscores Germany’s commitment to upholding international norms and principles, particularly in regions where tensions run high and maritime security is paramount. By actively participating in multinational efforts to safeguard freedom of navigation, Germany reaffirms its role as a responsible stakeholder in the global maritime domain.

Lindner’s remarks also shed light on the ongoing deliberations within the German Parliament regarding the mission in the Red Sea. With confidence in securing approval for the mission, Lindner highlighted the importance of parliamentary oversight and democratic processes in shaping Germany’s foreign policy decisions.

As geopolitical tensions continue to escalate and authoritarian regimes assert their influence on the world stage, the need for collective action and principled diplomacy has never been more pressing. Germany’s commitment to protecting the rule-based international order, promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and upholding freedom of navigation reflects its steadfast dedication to global peace and security.
