As part of its continuous efforts to bolster its naval capabilities and strengthen its maritime security, the Indian Navy is set to procure three additional Scorpène-class diesel-electric submarines. This development comes as a significant stride towards enhancing India’s underwater fleet, and these new submarines are expected to incorporate higher levels of indigenous content, presenting a host of advantages for the nation’s defence forces.

One of the primary objectives of acquiring these new Scorpène-class submarines is to address obsolescence issues that may have arisen over time in the older fleet. Obsolescence issues can directly impact the operational capability, safety, and reliability of critical electronics systems on the submarines, hindering their overall efficiency.

The collaboration between the Indian Navy and Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) has been instrumental in identifying and tackling these obsolescence challenges. As technology has advanced rapidly over the past few years, it is essential to ensure that the submarines are equipped with the latest and most reliable components to maintain peak performance.

Each submarine, even during advanced stages of manufacturing, can vary due to obsolescence issues being rectified. It is essential to address these challenges to ensure that no two submarines, even in the same class, have significant differences that may affect their operational capabilities.

To overcome these obsolescence issues, nearly 1000 small systems in the new submarines will be replaced with improved local equipment. By employing better indigenous technology, the Indian Navy aims to create a self-sustaining and reliable fleet that can operate efficiently for years to come.

The incorporation of higher indigenous content in the submarines not only enhances India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing but also ensures that the fleet remains robust and capable of meeting evolving challenges.
