India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is embarking on a crucial project to enhance the combat capabilities of its armoured regiments. The Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), a premier DRDO laboratory, is spearheading the development of a Battlefield Situational Awareness System (BSAS) as part of the “Advanced Vetronics for Futuristic AFVs” project.

The BSAS is a comprehensive system designed to provide real-time battlefield awareness to crew members operating Armoured fighting vehicles. This heightened awareness will significantly improve their decision-making capabilities in dynamic combat situations.

The BSAS will provide crew members with a clear picture of the battlefield, including friendly and enemy positions, potential threats, and terrain features. This comprehensive situational awareness will empower them to make informed decisions and react swiftly to evolving situations.

With access to real-time information, commanders can make quicker and more effective tactical decisions, potentially gaining a crucial edge over adversaries. By enhancing situational awareness, the BSAS can indirectly contribute to increased crew safety by allowing them to better anticipate and avoid threats.

Key Components of the BSAS:

  • Tactical Computer: The system’s central processing unit, responsible for gathering, processing, and disseminating critical battlefield information.
  • GVA Compliant HMI: A Graphical User Interface (HMI) that adheres to the General Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standards. This ensures compatibility with existing and future military equipment within the GVA ecosystem.
  • Integrated Navigation System: Combines inertial sensors, vehicle odometers, and multi-constellation GNSS receivers (including NavIC and GPS/GAGAN) to provide precise and reliable navigation data.
  • Inter-Crew Communication System: Enables seamless communication between crew members within the armoured vehicle, adhering to the GVA architecture and interfacing with both Software Defined Radios (SDRs) and legacy radios.

The development of the BSAS marks a significant step forward in equipping Indian Armoured forces with cutting-edge technology. This system has the potential to revolutionize battlefield awareness and decision-making for crew members, ultimately contributing to a more secure and effective fighting force.
