India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is making strides in developing a new generation anti-tank weapon system – the BMP-2K NAMICA Mk2. This project, spearheaded by the DRDO’s Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), aims to enhance India’s armored fighting capabilities.

The NAMICA Mk2 is an upgrade of the existing NAMICA (Nag Missile Carrier) system. The original NAMICA, based on a modified BMP-2 chassis, served as a platform for launching Nag anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs).

The Mk2 variant will be equipped with the new NAG Mk-2 ATGM, a more compact and potentially more advanced version of the original Nag missile. A significant change is the incorporation of newly developed twin missile launcher modules replacing the single launcher of the Mk1. This potentially doubles the firepower of the NAMICA system. To accommodate the twin launchers and associated systems, the NAMICA Mk2 features a modified turret design.

All the 4 Missile modules are provided with front & rear flaps which can be opened or closed through electromechanical actuators. The Gunner sight/Commander panoramic sight (consisting of Thermal imager for Night vision, CCD Camera for day vision and Laser Range Finder) provides a stabilized line-of-sight (LOS) for the tank Operator, thereby enabling him to carry out surveillance over n x 360° in azimuth and over -30° to +90° in elevation. The CPS is mounted on the turret with flap for commander surveillance.

The NAMICA Mk2 retains the trusted armament system of the BMP-2, including a 30 mm cannon and a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun, along with the associated ammunition loading systems. This ensures that the vehicle maintains its versatility and firepower in various combat scenarios.

The incorporation of an advanced FCS and sighting system significantly improves the targeting precision and overall effectiveness of the weapon system. These systems are designed to work seamlessly with the NAG Mk-2 ATGMs, ensuring optimal performance in the field.

The development of the NAMICA Mk2 is a crucial step forward in enhancing India’s anti-tank warfare capabilities. The compact NAG Mk-2 ATGMs, with their advanced guidance systems and potent warheads, are expected to provide a formidable counter to modern armored threats.
